Hector Berlioz Symphony Fantastique
Symphony Fantastique is a symphony which has five movements rather than the conventional four. All of the movements are connected by a recurring theme the Idee Fixe which is developed differently in each movement. All of the movements have romantic elements attached. Symphony Fantastique is also an example of programme music, it expresses Hector Berlioz love and obsession with his beloved Harriet Smithson. When this piece was composed Berlioz attached programme notes so the audience could follow the story while listening. The programme is fully realised throughout the originality of the music. Operatic practices were adapted in the Orchestration such as The use of bells, cor anglais, harp, multi-divisi strings, four timpani and prominent brass combine to ensure a colourful and dramatic piece of music.
